The Health System is Going to the Dogs!
What does Northern Liberties need next? How about an animal hospital? With all of the dogs, cats, and other well-loved pets keeping us company in our animal-friendly neighborhood, the Northern Liberties Animal Hospital will be a much welcomed addition to the community. Whenever our furry friends get sick or are in need of care, it’ll be nice to have a local place to take them. The 10,000 square foot veterinary hospital will be completed in Fall of 2011, located across from the Piazza at 966 N. 2nd Street. It will service dogs, cats and exotic pets such as birds, reptiles and small mammals. You can find more information on the Northern Liberties Animal Hospital Facebook. A Peek Inside Bloom in Northern Liberties
Sigh. That’s why life here is really, really, really good. Enter Bloom in the Piazza, and you’ll see what we mean. This clothing boutique has everything from those hyper-trendy faux leopard capelets you’ve been seeing on all of the fashion blogs, to the edgy black standbys that you need to pull off the occasional racy look. There are cold-weather accessories to bundle up with in case you ventured outside without that esssential hat or gloves, and a smart selection of bags to pack that second change of clothes or to stash your iPad in. This is the second location for Bloom, which currently has a shop located in Newark. It fits in perfectly in the neighborhood of Northern Liberties, and the new store has the feel of an art studio and a fashion geek’s closet at the same time.
The official opening is this Friday, November 12, from 6 – 10pm, and Bloom will celebrate with wine, beer, and 10% off purchases of $40 or more with the store flyer. 1001 N. Hancock St, Suite 20 Originally posted on The Philadelphia Real Estate Blog

The Emerald Isle of Northern Liberties
We want to point out a color we’ve been noticing a lot more lately in Northern Liberties: Green.
Two new businesses in the neighborhood have taken on a green approach. One is Green Eggs Cafe, which has opened its doors at 719 N. 2nd St. Catering to the brunch crowd during the weekends and coffee and lunch scene during the week, the cafe will pack its take-out in earth-friendly packaging and to-go cups and serves up quinoa porridge and creative comfort food like the Kitchen Sink Skillet and a Philly Style Eggs Benedict made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Another green-moniker-ed lunch stop is Green Olives Market, a Mediterranean olive bar and grocery store located at 992 N. 2nd St. across from the Piazza. Inside you’ll find friendly owners, a nice selection of gourmet olives at the olive bar, a variety of prepared foods and falafel sandwiches, and health food items such as various oats, flours, dried fruits, and fresh fruit and vegetables. We stopped in for a tour and the owner was kind enough to hold up the sign for us: Catering is available and we can’t wait to try a Mediterranean platter. Hours are: Monday – Closed. Tuesday – Thursday: 10am – 8pm Friday – Sunday: 10am – 10pm Welcome to our own Emerald Isle.

Ready for Another 12 Months in Northern Liberties?
Proceeds will benefit the Northern Liberties Clean & Green program, which promotes environmentally sustainable practices throughout the community. Activities include: tree planting, Christmas tree chipping, composting and rain barrel workshops, e-waste recycling, weekly street sweeping, and educational workshops on solar power and environmental responsibility. Through Clean & Green the NLNA has planted a hundred new trees, distributed over 1000 recycling containers, and successfully advocated for bike racks and solar trash and recycling compactors throughout our neighborhood.

Community Action Center Opens in Northern Liberties
It is inevitable. The SugarHouse Casino (which, by the way, had their VIP party this past Tuesday evening and has their grand opening scheduled for today) will drive more people to the area. Combined with the wide appeal of the Piazza and Liberties Walk, and the commercial and residential growth, we think that the DA taking up house in the Piazza is an extremely strong preventative measure. We hope to see this type of strategy applied to other areas of Philadelphia. Things like the DA moving into the Piazza do not just occur by happenstance. Northern Liberties is known for its powerful, outspoken, proactive neighborhood association, coupled with a strong Business Association, and supported by a sizable number of private development. It was no accident or whimsical decision to have the DA strategically placed at the center of an extremely active area and it is not about favoritism. It is about securing the success of a community that will be carried on the backs of the people who reside there. The Center will officially open in November and will be open a few days a week, to serve as a place for concerned citizens to report tips and address community issues and law enforcement. Williams wants to open additional centers in other neighborhoods as well. If you’d like to hear from Williams, he will be speaking at the NLNA’s General Meeting tonight at 7pm, located at 700 N. 3rd St.
