Community Action Center Opens in Northern Liberties

p1000925-768x1024On Tuesday, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams celebrated the grand opening of his Community Action Center, located in the Piazza in Northern Liberties.

It is inevitable. The SugarHouse Casino (which, by the way, had their VIP party this past Tuesday evening and has their grand opening scheduled for today) will drive more people to the area. Combined with the wide appeal of the Piazza and Liberties Walk, and the commercial and residential growth, we think that the DA taking up house in the Piazza is an extremely strong preventative measure. We hope to see this type of strategy applied to other areas of Philadelphia.

Things like the DA moving into the Piazza do not just occur by happenstance. Northern Liberties is known for its powerful, outspoken, proactive neighborhood association, coupled with a strong Business Association, and supported by a sizable number of private development. It was no accident or whimsical decision to have the DA strategically placed at the center of an extremely active area and it is not about favoritism. It is about securing the success of a community that will be carried on the backs of the people who reside there.

The Center will officially open in November and will be open a few days a week, to serve as a place for concerned citizens to report tips and address community issues and law enforcement. Williams wants to open additional centers in other neighborhoods as well.

If you’d like to hear from Williams, he will be speaking at the NLNA’s General Meeting tonight at 7pm, located at 700 N. 3rd St.

Opportunity Knocks for Exciting New Developments in Philadelphia

p1000783-1024x768Before you get to riled up that yet another bigwig is going to get money when the rest of us are scraping to make ends meet, we challenge you to think of the potential good that will come on the coattails of folks who can make things happen.

If Pennsylvania’s $4 billion capital budget proposal goes through, the neighborhoods of Philadelphia can expect some major development action as a benefit. Tower Investments developer Bart Blatstein would be among the recipients, with about $100 million in funds earmarked for upcoming projects that would include:

  • A rehab of the State Office Building at Broad and Spring Garden Streets (apartments, shops)
  • A 45-room hotel with a banquet facility next to the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties
  • 86-suite boutique hotel at Second and Poplar Streets in Northern Liberties (with additional parking)

Our only thoughts are: Bring it! We know that Philadelphia is long overdue in developing so many under-utilized parcels, buildings, and prime Real Estate for the growth and betterment of our city. When we see a developer with a successful track record turning a more or less blighted part of Philly into “The Piazza”, we think more of the same should be encouraged.

We know that if successful developers like Tower do not flex their entrepreneurial muscles, if they do not take a chance following their investment hunches, who else will?

And though there will always be naysayers and mudslingers, we know so many others will follow in Tower’s footsteps spurring new jobs and opening doors to opportunities.
