This Holiday Season Give Some Local Flavor!

ediblegiftphoto-558Want to give someone a taste of Philly for the holidays? Well this year, Philly Homegrown has provided us with a list of some edible gifts to give that are made right here in Philly.

For the potato chip lover in your life, have them try Herr’s Swiss Chocolate Covered Potato Chips. Potato Chips + Chocolate, how could you go wrong! Know someone who loves to cook? Gourmet foodery Di Bruno Bros.  signature line of house-label Italian olive oils and balsamic vinegars is perfect. For the coffee lover, give them a gift of Garces Trading Company Coffee Beans which are roasted in nearby Lambertville, NJ and for dunking, biscotti from Gilda’s Biscotti. Another great gift idea is to have a pint of gelato delivered to your front door. Capogiro Gelato offers this option! We, at RE/MAX ACCESS, are all too familiar with this awesome gelato because Nana Petrillo’s located right here at The Piazza with us serves it up daily!

For the full list of gift giving ideas, be sure to visit  Philly Homegrown ! You will be sure to find something for everyone on your list.

Everybody Loves Swag…in Northern Liberties

img_1472-1024x768

We immediately fell in love upon entering Swag, a gift shop next to Cantina Dos Segundos in Northern Liberties. The shop began selling gifts, showcasing locally made items, and featuring Philadelphia artists on Black Friday and was full of curious passersby this weekend. Blue walls set the backdrop for the colorful, fun-ctional wares, with collapsible colanders and ramen bowls for the kitchen guru on your holiday gift list, to eco-friendly totes, gift bags, and sweet treat extras for the last-minute birthday gift or a thoughtful just-because.

Swag has a section for Philly-made crafts, and the back wall of the store is currently showing off artwork from two talented Philadelphia art students, ages 12 and 14.

The unique items and appealing layout of the store make Swag a vibrant addition to 2nd Street – and we can certainly see a Swag bag or two in our future.

Hyperion Bank Holiday Food Drive Helps Raise Money for Local Families

26th-thanaksgiving-check-005-1024x768

Hyperion Bank in Northern Liberties, along with several local businesses in the community, helped support the 26th Police District in their Holiday Food Drive this year. They raised $880.00 that will go towards feeding families and senior citizens in need of a Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

We’d like to thank Hyperion and all of the generous contributors involved in these efforts, including the Kensington South Neighborhood Advisory Council (KSNAC), Girard Business and Arts Assocation (GBAA) and the Northern Liberties Business Owners Association (NLBOA). Hyperion matched their own employees’ contributions dollar for dollar. They also collected non-perishable food items.

Thank you and we wish everyone a wonderful holiday!

The Health System is Going to the Dogs!

ar125457299758313….and cats and birds and reptiles in Northern Liberties and we are thrilled about it!

What does Northern Liberties need next? How about an animal hospital?

With all of the dogs, cats, and other well-loved pets keeping us company in our animal-friendly neighborhood, the Northern Liberties Animal Hospital will be a much welcomed addition to the community. Whenever our furry friends get sick or are in need of care, it’ll be nice to have a local place to take them.

The 10,000 square foot veterinary hospital will be completed in Fall of 2011, located across from the Piazza at 966 N. 2nd Street. It will service dogs, cats and exotic pets such as birds, reptiles and small mammals.

You can find more information on the Northern Liberties Animal Hospital Facebook.

A Peek Inside Bloom in Northern Liberties

bloom1In Northern Liberties, stylish boutiques often pop up out of nowhere. The owners are always happy to see you, the windows are full of things you can’t help but look at, and there’s often an opening party with a sweet discount.

Sigh. That’s why life here is really, really, really good.

Enter Bloom in the Piazza, and you’ll see what we mean. This clothing boutique has everything from those hyper-trendy faux leopard capelets you’ve been seeing on all of the fashion blogs, to the edgy black standbys that you need to pull off the occasional racy look. There are cold-weather accessories to bundle up with in case you ventured outside without that esssential hat or gloves, and a smart selection of bags to pack that second change of clothes or to stash your iPad in.

This is the second location for Bloom, which currently has a shop located in Newark. It fits in perfectly in the neighborhood of Northern Liberties, and the new store has the feel of an art studio and a fashion geek’s closet at the same time.

The official opening is this Friday, November 12, from 6 – 10pm, and Bloom will celebrate with wine, beer, and 10% off purchases of $40 or more with the store flyer.

The Emerald Isle of Northern Liberties

p1000949-1024x768

We want to point out a color we’ve been noticing a lot more lately in Northern Liberties:

Green.

img_0829-768x1024

Two new businesses in the neighborhood have taken on a green approach.

One is Green Eggs Cafe, which has opened its doors at 719 N. 2nd St. Catering to the brunch crowd during the weekends and coffee and lunch scene during the week, the cafe will pack its take-out in earth-friendly packaging and to-go cups and serves up quinoa porridge and creative comfort food like the Kitchen Sink Skillet and a Philly Style Eggs Benedict made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Another green-moniker-ed lunch stop is Green Olives Market, a Mediterranean olive bar and grocery store located at 992 N. 2nd St. across from the Piazza. Inside you’ll find friendly owners, a nice selection of gourmet olives at the olive bar, a variety of prepared foods and falafel sandwiches, and health food items such as various oats, flours, dried fruits, and fresh fruit and vegetables. We stopped in for a tour and the owner was kind enough to hold up the sign for us:

Catering is available and we can’t wait to try a Mediterranean platter.

Hours are:

Monday – Closed.

Tuesday – Thursday: 10am – 8pm

Friday – Sunday: 10am – 10pm

Welcome to our own Emerald Isle.
