Who’s Down with TD in the NE?

The Great Northeast is part of Philly, too! Northeast is an often ignored section of Philly when we think of art and entertainment districts. It’s typically characterized by slews of brick rowhomes, twins, Boulevards, Avenues, and large strip malls. But there is a lot going on NE…and we thought we’d give a little shout out to something new.

The only open mic night in the Northeast. Philadelphia, that is.

It’s going down every Thursday from 8- 11pm at TD’s Irish Pub at 7770 Dungan Rd. So gather your best Northeast accent and let it out there.

Well…we never though of the Northeast as a prime open mic destination, but it could be! What are your favorite things to do in the NE?

Fall Sprawl Savings from Northern Liberties to Queen Village

fall-sprawlBy next weekend, you will be deeply entrenched in the feeling of fall. So even though you want some new seasonal clothing now, we suggest you wait a week and take advantage of Fall Sprawl, “a shopping pilgrimage” that will spread the deals through Northern Liberties to Queen Village. Two really cool urban shopping districts with unique retailers, spunky coffeeshops/teahouses, and easy access from one neighborhood to the other. Get your fix of art, furniture, clothing, shoes, accessories, and then celebrate your savvy selections with coffee, beer, and snack deals.

Here’s how it works:

Participating boutiques will be giving 10% off to start with. Shop at any location and get a stick on your card each time you shop. 1 sticker = 15% off your next shopping destination and 2 stickers = 20% off at the shop after that. Get 3 stickers to get the special deals at the food establishments and continue to get 20% off at any participating locations thereafter.

Participating stores:

Millesime, 1001-13 N 2nd St (at the Piazza)

Philadelphia Gone Wild

philadelphiagonewildSo the news in Philadelphia has taken a turn for the wild lately, and we’re over here wondering what on earth could be next? First, there was that blogger tax controversy, and then a story about a mobile cupcake truck being confiscated by L&I.

Well, in this ode to the wacky, the bonkers, the absolutely wild, we’d like to point out a couple of crazy yet POSITIVE new happenings in our neck of the woods.

It’s no secret that Philadelphians love their burgers just as much as we go cuckoo for cupcakes. It was just a matter of time before Piazza burger bar PYT came up with a Red Velvet Cupcake Burger. You read that right. This Burger of the Week is available right now and is an opportunist’s dream of a Ground Chicken patty dipped in Red Velvet Cupcake batter and then dredged in toasted Red Velvet Cupcake toasted crumbs. Deep fried and served with a Cream Cheese Sauce and topped with thin Granny Smith Apple slices on a soft Challah bread brioche bun from Kaplan’s Bakery in Northern Liberties. Of course, you get fries with that. Not only is PYT located in Northern Liberties, but the bun from nearby Kaplan’s and the cupcakes from a neighborhood baker (Pamcakes Sweet Cupcakery) make this a true ode to Northern Liberties if there ever was one.

As if that was not enough, the Piazza has announced its First Annual Recess at the Piazza Dodgeball Tournament. Why not revisit your childhood love of dodgeball in the neighborhood where anything goes? For information to register for the tournament, email recessatthepiazza@gmail.com. The first tournament will be held on September 14.

What’s going on in your city?

A Toast to Fishtown: Penn Treaty’s 5th Annual Champagne in the Park

champagneintheparkOn Friday, September 10, it’s time to break out the bubbly for Penn Treaty Park’s 5th Annual Champagne in the Park. Refreshments from Johnny Brenda’s, Ekta, and others will be served and drinks will be flowing as live jazz music fills the air in celebration of the park and its future. Some of the ideas to improve the Fishtown riverside destination include a lighting project that would install solar powered lights and new playground equipment.

To purchase your $35 ticket, contact info@penntreatypark.org or call Nancy Martino at 215-426-1090.

The Greenest Streets In Fishtown

green20block20street20signStreet signs are green, right?

But how green are they really? According to Sustainable 19125,  they can be a little greener. To see what we mean, just check out the new signs on the following blocks:

  • 700 Moyer
  • 1300 Earl
  • 2300 Memphis
  • 2400 Tulip
  • 2200 Coral
  • 2500 Gordon
  • 2600 Salmon

These blocks in New Kensington and Fishtown have achieved “Green Block” status, an initiative that rewards streets for making efforts to become more efficient. How can you get your block on board?

Make sure that your neighbors all use Blue Recycling Bins that they can pick up at NKCDC (2515 Frankford Avenue) during regular business hours. Plastics #1 – 7 are now accepted.

Is each house signed up for RecycleBank to earn points for recycling? The limit is one bin per household. Each individual must sign out for his/her own bin. PMBC Block Captains and Green Guides can take multiple bins for their blocks if needed. Email sustainable19125@gmail.com for more information and visit their website for more tips.

Fringe is Back for Fall

Oh no, not that fringe. Fringe is something entirely different in Philadelphia. Live Arts and Fringe Festival is one of those yearly events that is so inherently Philadelphian that you can’t help but love it, hate it, and be confounded by it all at the same time. You go to a bunch of shows that are mind-blowing that showcase some of the city’s greatest talents (and some visiting performers from around the world). You take in at least two performances that you consider skipping out on halfway through but then you end up staying because it’s actually kind of interesting once you give it a chance. And then there is that one event that you simply just do not understand and feel slightly and wonderfully disturbed by it for several days.

This is Live Arts and Fringe. This is what it’s about. This is Philadelphia.

2010′s roster of events gives us some neighborhood-specific action and since we are downright neighborhood-obsessed, we are focusing on these picks. If you read our blog often, you know that we try not to leave the many neighborhoods of Philadelphia uncovered. We snap photos, we poke around in the local coffeeshops, and we get to know the most hidden crevices, the fringe, as you would, of Philadelphia.

Without further ado, we present to your our Neighborhood Live Arts/Fringe Picks, from September 3 – 18:

If you’re in Kensington… Check out the Cheap Guy HOF, Class of 2010, in one of Kensington’s newest spaces, the Papermill Theater. The series of short plays is put on by Hella Fresh Theatre. The show opens on Saturday, September 4 and runs every Saturday and Sunday throughout the Philly Fringe. Papermill Community for the Arts, 2825 Ormes Street, Kensington. Times vary, $10. Try Fresh Juice at the Mascher Space Co-op. Sept. 5-6, Sept. 11. $10

Find yourself in the Fringe hotbed of Northern Liberties? Take part in AFOOT: Northern Liberties, a walking tour with the neighborhood set as a “game board”, you’ll be given a series of clues that your team will have to solve for prizes and swag. Saturday, September 4, and Saturday, September 11, from 11 – 3pm. Teams leave every 10 minutes, $10.

Nothing good on TV in your South Philly rowhome? The Real Housewives of South Philly will perk you up. The Waitstaff Sketch Comedy Troupe does not disappoint. Sept. 5, 8, 12,14, 16, 19. $15.

Near the Schuylkill River Trail? Constants, from Movement Brigade, explores the history of Philadelphia as the Schuylkill River remains the same. Sept 13-18, free, reservations required.

Are you a Poe fan lurking near Callowhill? There are two options for you. The Mutter Museum will be showing the Tell-Tale Heart from the aptly named Nevermore Theatre Project on Saturday, September 4, and September 11, and Sunday, September 12. $10. Or you can try Edgar Allan Poe Comes Alive! at 1831 Brandywine St. from Traveling Jones Theater. Sept. 3-4 and Sept. 17-18, $14.

Stretching Out West?

Whose City? from the Media Mobilizing Project Art & Culture Collective is a collage of art, poetry, and music, inspired by the people that live, work, and play in Philadelphia. Sept. 3-4, Sept. 10-11. $5.

Food Co-op Comes to Kensington

kensingtoncommunityfoodco-op

When you’re out and about this First Friday, take a break from art for a minute and turn your attention to food. The Kensington Community Food Co-op will be launching their membership campaign with a party at 2205 Frankford Avenue from 6 – 10pm. Take in 4 local bands and plenty of local beer all for the cause of local food. The KCFC will be discussing their project and membership opportunities. There is a $5 suggested donation. From the KCFC:

“Wouldn’t it be great to be just minutes from your favorite grocery store? Wouldn’t it be great to completely trust that your store has your best interests in mind? Wouldn’t it be great to have regular access to local fresh and organic foods at an affordable fair price? It will be great! A handful of your neighbors, people not much different than you, came together in 2008 with the mission to open a member-owned cooperative grocery store in the Kensington area.”

The Co-op is finally coming to fruition. See for yourself this Friday and lend your support, Kensington.
